What Is Being Recalled

Which model of battery is being recalled?

The recall affects only GPMP0401. The battery is encased in red shrink wrap and has a white label with black printing. The label reads "ElectriFly 950 mAh 11.1V Lithium Polymer Battery" and has the stock number "GPMP0401".

The recall DOES NOT APPLY to batteries labeled as GPMP0709 or any other item numbers.

All Axe CP-L helicopters (HMXE06**) should be updated with the Lipo Protection Module (LPM) and new GPMP0709 battery. The LPM unit prevents the lipo battery from being discharged to an unsafe level. To find out more about the LPM unit, click on this link. To view the replacement battery specifications, please click on this link.

When were the batteries sold?

The batteries were included with the Heli-Max Axe CP-L Helicopter (HMXE06**) purchased between November 2007 and April 2008. The battery was also sold separately as a replacement part. All batteries with the stock number GPMP0401 are being recalled, even if purchased after April 2008.

Where is the model number located?

It's printed on the right side of the label below the words "LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY - WIRED FOR BALANCING".

Is the helicopter included in the recall?

No. Only the battery pack (GPMP0401) is being recalled. This battery might have been purchased separately or as part of the Heli-Max Axe CP-L Helicopter (HMXE06**).

Is the NiMH battery from the original Axe CP included in the recall?

No. The only battery being recalled is GPMP0401 labeled as "ElectriFly 950 mAh 11.1V Lithium Polymer Battery".

This recall DOES NOT APPLY to the original Axe CP Helicopter (HMXE04**) which included a Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery.

Reasons for Recall

Why are these batteries being recalled?

Because Heli-Max has determined that in some cases the battery pack may overheat and pose a fire hazard Heli-Max is voluntarily recalling this battery from the Axe CP-L helicopter.

What causes the battery to overheat?

When using Lithium Polymer batteries it is very important to avoid over-discharging below a safe voltage level. Otherwise, the battery cells can be damaged. As stated in the instructions for the Axe CP-L helicopter, it is very important that when you notice that your model is beginning to lose power during flight you must land safely, stop flying, allow the battery to cool and then recharge according to the instructions. DO NOT continue to use your helicopter after it begins losing power. It is also important to follow the instructions provided with your charger.

IMPORTANT!! Always remove the LiPo battery pack from the helicopter and charge the battery in a location that is fireproof. Never leave the battery unattended while being charged! If the battery becomes hot, starts to smoke or begins to swell immediately disconnect the battery from the charger and carefully move the battery to a fireproof location! Use only approved power input accessories - either the included 12V car adapter or AC wall adapter (also available separately GPMM3310).
